Facades

From 1989 to 1992, I created and coordinated a project called Art in the Windows, which enhanced vacant downtown storefronts by using them to display installations by local artists. I realized that an even greater urban blight was storefronts without windows: boarded up properties unlikely to be inhabited in the near future. “Genesis” was the first project of this nature, afterwards I created “Climbing” (This project is featured on another page). During this time, a friend of mine opened a club in Over-the-Rhine. He invited me to create a facade. The result was “Portal”.

	Portal I wanted something elegant and edgy for this techno dance club. The forms are a cross between thorns and flames. Individual pieces of plywood were cut, sanded and painted, then mounted on the exterior.
